Main Talk:

Leveraging a Daily Creative Habit to Unlock Your Best Work

We are all creators. Some people write, some are artists, while others are content creators. Often there is a huge gap in what we envision and what we execute. It can seem overwhelming thinking of our desired creative end goal, leaving us paralyzed. We don't need more items for our do list. We need to learn how to develop a daily creative habit that taps into our passion and abilities, giving us clarity and focus. No one sits down and writes a book. They write sentences and paragraphs at a time. An artist doesn't create a masterpiece in one sitting. She shows up, time and again, putting in the work. It's the truth in what Vincent Van Gogh said, “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together”

In my talk, I share my creative journey that went from being a disillusioned designer and depression (and giving up on my creativity for 10 years), to returning via a 365-day daily creative journey that has lasted for over ten consecutive years. Through that journey, I uncovered a creative process that establishes a daily creative habit, harnessing momentum that leads to consistent creation. I inspire through my personal story, as well as provide four keys to developing your own daily creative habit including:

1. Start Small

2. Schedule It

3. Play!

4. Celebrate Your Wins

I love to share what I've experienced on my journey to inspire creators and entrepreneurs to show up consistently on their quest for creativity & innovation, through a daily creative habit!

Podcast / Interview Talking Points:

Potential Topics: Goal-driven Creativity via a Daily Creative Habit, Innovation through play, Creativity & Mental Health

Question 1: What is one strategy to help people who might be stumbling to start their creative process?

Motivation is a problem. When you’re stuck in that place of inaction you need a catalyst to get you going and then a system to keep you going.

  • Point #1- we need a new daily creative habit

  • Point #2 - Start moving, keep moving

Question 2: How does someone advance in their creative process when facing a lack of inspiration?

Why NOT to rely on “the Muse” when creating. Here’s why.

  • Point #1 - The Muse is finicky.

  • Point #2 - Create new habit of capturing

  • Point #3 - Stockpile: gather when we don’t need, so when we do need - not drawing from empty well.

Question 3: Can you walk us through a strategy to help our listeners who are struggling with time to create?

How to prioritize creating even though we will never “find the time.”

  • Point #1 - “finding time” is a myth

  • Point #2 - How do we prioritize? Schedule it.

  • Point #3 - Learn to use our creativity on time management, and our process, not just on the “product”

Quotes:

  • Habits create momentum, and momentum brings change.

  • You can’t create in the moment unless you have prepared for it.

  • If you go with the flow, your flow will eventually go, causing you to drift.

  • If you’re not sacrificing FOR your thing, you’re sacrificing your thing.

  • Play is a necessity, not a luxury.

  • Play invites us to have margin. If we have no margin, we have no discovery. Without discovery, there’s no growth.

  • Too often we treat play as a reward for following the process, as opposed to actually being a part of the process. Play is waiting.

Make Fun A Habit: Strategies for Innovation Through Creativity and Play

Remember when you would sit in the sand as a kid and make all sorts of things? Sandcastles, pirate ships, the sky was truly the limit. But then one day we wake up and feel stuck in the constraints that are around us, leaving us little room to do anything outside of the confines of our daily routines. The obvious solutions seem to be work harder, get up earlier, be more productive, nose to the grindstone, but what if the answer wasn’t that clear? According to research published in Perspectives on Psychological Science, play at work is linked to less fatigue, boredom, stress, and burnout for employees. In his workshop, Make Fun A Habit: Unlocking Innovation Through Creativity and Play, Mike Brennan will help your team uncover the possibilities of play to reach the levels of productivity they have been grappling for with less stress, more fun, and better results. During this one-day workshop your team will go through team-building exercises to help them communicate more efficiently, meet deadlines, and increase productivity. Play at work is a necessity, not a luxury and this workshop will help your organization harness the power of play in an authentic and measurable way.
